Objectives
In this free two-hour workshop, you will learn:
- How to approach a scientific paper
- What you can do to make writing easier
- What to keep in mind to become a better writer (and editor of your writing)
Participants: This course is designed for postdocs and GSRAs. Scientists are also welcome to attend.
Course summary
This workshop will include general suggestions for getting started, getting focused, and writing and editing with the reader/listener/audience in mind. It is intended for anyone who writes science papers for publication, but may be of particular interest to those who have trouble getting started on, or organizing their papers.
The instructor is Dan Hawkes, Editor and Writer, Earth Sciences Division. Dan has received degrees in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University, New Jersey. He taught English for over ten years at Rutgers and UCLA, and has been a science and technical writer/editor for the Earth Sciences Division since 1997. In addition to having edited hundreds of scientific papers, Dan is the author of Catching the Bullet and Other Stories (Scarlet Tanager Books, 2000).
