Whether it’s been called the Radiation Laboratory (Rad Lab), Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), or simply Berkeley Lab, this facility has been on the cutting edge of science and technology research for over 80 years.

Located on a 200-acre site in the hills above the University of California’s Berkeley campus, LBNL is the oldest U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory.

Managed by the University of California (UC) for the DOE, the Laboratory conducts unclassified research across a wide variety of scientific disciplines. Key efforts are focused on new energy systems, quantitative biology, nanoscience, fundamental studies of the universe, environmental solutions, and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery.
